Igreja da Graça
Our Lady of Grace Church, Évora. Designed in the Renaissance style by royal architect Miguel de Arruda (1???-1563), built around 1530-1540, with additions in the mannerist and baroque styles. The distinctive mannerist facade is adorned by the sculptures of four sitting giants (only three are visible from this angle) representing Atlantids, usually attributed to Nicolau Chanterene/Nicolas de Chanterenne (ca. 1470-1551) a sculptor of French origin who was active mainly in Spain and Portugal. The church was originally attached to the Convent of Our Lady of Grace. Following the dissolution of religious orders in 1834, it became first a school and later a cork factory. It entered into a period of decline that culminated in the caving in of the roof, destroying much of the interior. It was restored to the extent possible in the second half of the 20th century.
