Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Espinheiro

The Convent of Nossa Senhora do Espinheiro is a former monastery of the Order of St. Jerome located two kilometers from the Old Town of Évora. It dates back to the fifteenth century, and today it is a hotel as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1458, given the importance of the site as a destination for pilgrimages, a church and monastery was founded, and received the attention of many rulers throughout Portugal’s history. With the closing of the religious order in 1834, the convent was unoccupied, going to the possession of the Portuguese State and later sold. It fell into disrepair until it was acquired by Manuel Gabriel Lopes, who restored the property. Today, the Church of Our Lady of Espinheiro remains an integral part of the hotel.
